Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Arizona Qualified Foster Care Charitable Organization (QFCO) Tax Credit?
This incredible program puts you in charge of your Arizona tax dollars! As an Arizona resident, you have the power to decide how some of your state taxes are used. By donating to OCJ Kids, you’re making a direct impact on the foster care community in our state, and you get that money back when you file your taxes. It’s a win-win!
How does the Foster Care Tax Credit work?
t’s pretty simple! For the 2025 tax filing year, you can give to OCJ Kids and claim up to:
- $1,234 for couples filing jointly
- $618 for single filers (including married filing separately and head of household)
Here’s how it generally works:
- If you owe state taxes: Your donation to OCJ Kids can directly reduce the amount you owe to Arizona.
- If you don’t owe state taxes (or are getting a refund): You can still donate! You’ll receive a dollar-for-dollar credit back towards your state taxes as a refund.
Basically, it’s a way to redirect your tax dollars to support a cause you care about without costing you anything extra! Our QFCO code is #10018.
Can I give to other Arizona tax credit categories too?
Yes, absolutely! The Arizona Foster Care Tax Credit is separate from other tax credits like the Arizona School Tax Credit. This means you CAN contribute to OCJ Kids and also claim credits for donations to schools, other charities, and even veterans’ organizations. You can often claim multiple credits, maximizing your positive impact!
Do I have to itemize my deductions to claim this credit?
No, you do not! Since the 2013 tax year, you do not need to itemize deductions on your Arizona return to claim the tax credit for contributions to a Qualifying Foster Charitable Organization like OCJ Kids. This makes it even easier to participate!
What's the difference between a tax credit and a tax deduction?
This is a great question!
- A tax credit (what you get with your donation to OCJ Kids!) directly reduces the amount of tax you owe, dollar for dollar. In many cases, if the credit is more than what you owe, you can get the difference back as a refund.
- A tax deduction reduces your taxable income, which then reduces the amount of tax you owe. Deductions are typically less impactful than credits.
It’s important to note that you can’t claim both a deduction and a credit for the same charitable contribution on your Arizona return.
